News Now: Ohio State football coach Ryan Day explain connections to Adam Sandler

Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day is best known for his leadership on the sidelines and his intense focus on building a national championship program. But in a lighter moment that caught the attention of fans and media alike, Day recently shared a unique personal connection — one that links him to none other than comedy legend Adam Sandler.

During a media availability this past week, Day was asked about his background and any unexpected relationships he’s had along the way. That’s when he revealed his connection to Sandler, a Massachusetts native like Day himself.

“Yes, there’s a bit of a connection there,” Day said with a smile. “We’re both from the same area. He went to Central High in Manchester, New Hampshire, and I was just over the border in Manchester, too. There’s definitely some hometown pride there.”

While Day and Sandler didn’t grow up together or attend the same schools, they share common roots in New England and have crossed paths through mutual acquaintances and local pride. Day also noted that Sandler’s success — both as an entertainer and as someone who never forgot where he came from — has always resonated with him.

“He’s someone who’s really embraced where he’s from,” Day added. “He’s done a lot to support the community back home. And growing up, it was cool to see someone from our neck of the woods make it on such a big stage.”

The Buckeyes’ coach said he’s met Sandler briefly and that there’s mutual respect between them, especially as representatives of their hometowns. Sandler, known for roles in films like *Happy Gilmore*, *The Waterboy*, and *Uncut Gems*, is also an avid sports fan — particularly of college football.

“I wouldn’t say we’re close friends or anything like that,” Day laughed. “But I’ve bumped into him a couple of times and he’s always been super friendly. He’s a big sports guy, so we’ve had a few quick conversations.”

Day’s revelation sparked a wave of social media reactions, with many Buckeye fans amused and delighted by the unexpected connection. Some even joked that they’d love to see Sandler make a cameo in the Ohio State locker room or appear in a team hype video.

The moment offered a refreshing glimpse into Day’s personality — a reminder that even the most intense and driven coaches have stories and relationships outside of football.

“Sometimes we forget coaches are real people too,” one fan posted on X. “That’s actually pretty cool — who knew Ryan Day and Adam Sandler had ties?”

While Day remains laser-focused on leading Ohio State through another championship-caliber season, the nod to his shared New England heritage with Sandler was a welcome detour — and a reminder that life, like football, often includes some unexpected connections.

As Day wrapped up the conversation, he grinned again: “Hey, if Adam ever wants to come to a game, he’s more than welcome. I’ll save him a sideline pass.”
