Breaking: Derby County thanked over transfer as club confirms return

Boston United have confirmed that Derby County striker Tony Weston is heading back to Pride Park after the Pilgrims completed a remarkable escape from relegation.

 

Weston was one of six players to have spent time at the Jakemans Stadium having joined them on loan last summer with the deal being extend until the end of the season in January.

The former Blackpool and Rangers striker failed to score on goal in the league for the Pilgrims who secured their National League status against all the odds.

Until Graham Coughlan arrived as manager, Boston looked all but consigned to an instant return to National League North, but won 10 and drew two of their last 16 games to stay up.

 

Confirming Weston’s return, Boston said in a statement: “Boston United’s six loan players have all returned to their parent clubs at the conclusion of the National League campaign.

 

“Defender Noah Wadsworth (Hull City), midfielders Greg Sloggett (Hartlepool United) and Oisin Gallagher (Lincoln City) and strikers Jimmy Knowles (Accrington Stanley), James Gale (Mansfield Town) and Tony Weston (Derby County) have all spent spells of differing lengths at the Jakemans Community Stadium this season.

 

“They all depart with the club’s thanks and best wishes for the future.

 

“We also thank the loaning clubs for their support throughout the season.

“A further update on the Pilgrims’ contracted players will follow over the coming days.”

 

Weston signed for Derby after being released by Rangers in the summer of 2023. He made his senior bow for the club in an EFL Trophy clash against Wolves in which he impressed in a big win.

 

He signed a year’s deal last summer before being sent on loan to Boston where he has made 26 appearances this season. His contract is set to expire this summer.
