Breaking: The Texas Longhorns will celebrate the immense legacy of legend Earl Campbell by erecting a statue in his Lasting Legacy

In a powerful tribute to one of the most revered figures in college football history, the Texas Longhorns have announced plans to erect a statue in honor of legendary running back Earl Campbell. The monument will stand as a lasting symbol of Campbell’s immense contributions to the program and his enduring legacy in the sport.

The news was made public on Monday through an official release from the University of Texas athletic department, confirming that the statue will be unveiled near Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, where Campbell electrified fans during his college career. The statue is expected to be completed and revealed during the upcoming football season.

Known as “The Tyler Rose,” Earl Campbell is widely considered one of the greatest running backs in NCAA history. During his time at Texas from 1974 to 1977, he bulldozed his way into the national spotlight, capturing the Heisman Trophy in 1977 and leaving defenders in his wake with his bruising running style. His impact on the Longhorns program was immediate and unforgettable.

“Earl Campbell is not just a Longhorn legend—he’s a Texas legend,” said UT Athletic Director Chris Del Conte in the announcement. “His strength, determination, and humility have inspired generations of players and fans. This statue will stand as a permanent reminder of what it means to wear the Burnt Orange with pride.”

Campbell’s accolades go far beyond college football. After being selected No. 1 overall in the 1978 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, he went on to have a Hall of Fame professional career. But for many in Texas, his legacy begins with the Longhorns, where he broke records, set a standard of excellence, and helped shape the identity of the program.

The statue project has been in the works for over a year, with input from university leadership, Campbell’s family, former teammates, and Longhorn fans. The artwork will depict Campbell in a signature running pose—lowering his shoulders, eyes locked ahead, symbolizing his relentless drive on the field.

Campbell, now 70, expressed deep gratitude for the honor. “It’s truly humbling,” he said in a statement. “To be remembered like this by the University of Texas and to have a statue where so many great players have played—it’s a blessing. I just wanted to play the game the right way and represent my family and my school with pride.”

Former teammates and coaches have also celebrated the announcement. “Earl changed the game,” said one former coach. “He was more than just a player—he was the heart of the team, and he gave everything he had every time he touched the ball.”

Fans can expect a special ceremony at the statue’s unveiling, with details to be announced in the coming months. The event is expected to draw a large crowd of Longhorn faithful, eager to pay tribute to a player who has meant so much to the school, the state, and the sport itself.
