Derby County urged to sign 28-year-old “at all costs” – West Brom are also interested

Derby County have been strongly encouraged to go all-in to secure the signature of a 28-year-old transfer target, who is also reportedly on the radar of Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion.

As the summer transfer window heats up, the Rams are being urged by former players, pundits, and sections of the fanbase to act decisively and bring in the experienced player, who many believe could be a game-changer for the club’s Championship return. The player’s name is being kept under wraps for now due to ongoing negotiations, but insiders confirm that both Derby and West Brom have made early contact with his representatives.

The 28-year-old, currently a free agent after leaving his previous club at the end of the season, is understood to be considering his options carefully. Having attracted interest from several Championship sides, it’s Derby and West Brom who are believed to be leading the race. Derby’s appeal, however, may lie in the promise of a key role and the momentum generated by their promotion from League One under manager Paul Warne.

Sources close to the club say the Rams’ recruitment team has identified the player as a priority signing — someone who fits both the club’s budget and its footballing philosophy. The midfielder/forward (his exact position has not been disclosed to protect negotiations) is seen as a leader on and off the pitch, with a proven track record at Championship level.

Speaking on a local radio station, former Derby captain Shaun Barker said the club “must sign him at all costs.”

“This is the kind of player Derby need to be going for,” Barker said. “He’s experienced, versatile, and hungry to prove a point. You don’t get too many players of his calibre on a free — Derby should be pulling out all the stops.”

Fans have echoed that sentiment across social media, with many calling on the club to act quickly before West Brom formalise their interest. Some have expressed concern that Albion, with a more established Championship squad, could tempt the player with a greater chance at promotion — making it vital for Derby to move decisively.

West Brom, for their part, are believed to be monitoring the situation closely but are not expected to make a formal offer until they’ve resolved a few outgoing transfers. That gives Derby a potential window of opportunity — but not a long one.

Paul Warne is understood to be fully behind the push, having made it clear to the board that he wants this particular player as part of his plans for the 2025/26 season. Derby’s recruitment strategy this summer has focused on mixing youthful energy with seasoned professionals, and this signing would be a perfect representation of that balance.
