Former Penn State wrestler Kurt McHenry picks his transfer destination; where will he compete next?
Kurt McHenry, once one of the most promising lightweight recruits in college wrestling, has officially chosen his next chapter. The former Penn State wrestler, who entered the transfer portal earlier this year, has announced his decision to continue his collegiate career at the University of Virginia.
McHenry, a two-time Cadet World Champion before arriving at Penn State, was one of the most highly-touted prospects in his class. However, despite the initial hype, injuries and the Nittany Lions’ stacked lineup limited his mat time in Happy Valley. Now, the accomplished wrestler is looking for a fresh start — and he believes Charlottesville is the place to make it happen.
“This was about finding a fit that allows me to compete, grow, and contribute right away,” McHenry said in a statement released by UVA Wrestling. “Penn State gave me a strong foundation, but I’m ready for new challenges and the opportunity to lead.”
Virginia head coach Steve Garland welcomed McHenry with enthusiasm, calling him “a difference-maker” for the program.
“Kurt brings world-class experience and a hunger to prove himself. He’s a technician on the mat and a student of the sport. Our team is going to benefit not only from his skill, but also from his leadership.”
McHenry is expected to slot into the Cavaliers’ lower weight classes, likely at 125 pounds, where he’ll look to make an immediate impact in the ACC — a conference known for its competitive depth. His addition adds depth and firepower to a Virginia squad looking to climb in the national rankings.
The move also marks a full-circle moment for McHenry, who originally hails from Virginia and was a high school standout at St. Paul VI Catholic High School. Returning to his home state brings both comfort and motivation.
“There’s something special about coming home,” McHenry said. “It’s where I fell in love with wrestling, and now I get the chance to finish what I started — just in a new singlet.”
For wrestling fans, McHenry’s transfer is one of the more intriguing moves of the offseason. While his career at Penn State didn’t unfold as many expected, few doubt his talent or work ethic. With a new team and a clear path to the starting lineup, McHenry now has the chance to finally showcase his abilities on the national stage.
His eligibility status for the upcoming season has not yet been officially confirmed, but sources close to the program expect him to be cleared for competition.
