Mitchell Pearce Granted Immediate Release

Veteran halfback Mitchell Pearce has been granted an immediate release from his playing contract, bringing an unexpected end to his most recent rugby league chapter and prompting speculation about what’s next for the experienced playmaker.

The announcement came via an official club statement earlier today, confirming that Pearce had requested the release on personal grounds — a request that was respected and approved by mutual agreement. The move ends his tenure overseas, where he had been plying his trade since departing the NRL in 2021.

“This decision wasn’t made lightly,” Pearce said. “I’ve had a lot of time to reflect, and I feel that now is the right moment for me to step away. I’m incredibly grateful to the club, my teammates, and the fans for all their support during my time here.”

The 34-year-old, who enjoyed a distinguished career in the NRL with both the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights, moved to France to join Super League side Catalans Dragons after leaving Australia. He was instrumental in their run to the 2023 Grand Final and brought valuable experience and leadership to the squad during his stint in the south of France.

However, Pearce has battled injury setbacks and off-field pressures in recent months, leading to growing rumours that he was contemplating retirement or a move back home. While he has not yet confirmed whether he will hang up the boots for good, sources close to Pearce suggest he is leaning toward stepping away from the professional game altogether.

Catalans Dragons coach Steve McNamara paid tribute to Pearce’s influence on the team, saying:

“Mitch brought professionalism and drive to our club from day one. He’s a competitor, a leader, and a top-quality half. We respect his decision and wish him all the best in whatever comes next.”

Pearce’s departure leaves a significant void in the Dragons’ spine, and the club is expected to explore recruitment options to cover his absence. Youngster César Rougé is tipped to step up, while the club may also consider bringing in an experienced playmaker to maintain their competitiveness heading into the second half of the Super League season.

Pearce retires — if this is indeed the end — with an impressive legacy. A 2013 NRL Premiership winner with the Roosters and a veteran of 300+ first-grade games, he was a consistent presence at the top level for over a decade. Despite enduring heavy criticism early in his career, particularly during State of Origin campaigns with New South Wales, Pearce won over many critics with his resilience, maturity, and long-term contribution to the game.

As for what’s next, Pearce says he’s taking time to assess his options:

“Right now, it’s about stepping back and taking a breath. I’ve spent my whole life in rugby league, so I’m sure I’ll stay connected in some way. But for now, I’m just looking forward to the next chapter — whatever that might be.”
