Netflix has officially announced a major addition to its expanding sports documentary lineup with the upcoming release of “The Legend of 34,” a sweeping and emotional film chronicling the extraordinary influence of Herschel Walker—the legendary Heisman Trophy winner—on the University of Georgia Bulldogs football program.

According to a report by ESPN, the long-anticipated documentary will premiere globally later this year, offering an unprecedented look at the life, career, and cultural impact of the man who wore No. 34 and changed the course of Georgia football forever.

Described by Netflix executives as a “landmark documentary event,” The Legend of 34 is expected to blend archival footage, exclusive interviews, and never-before-heard stories from former teammates, coaches, fans, and Walker himself. The documentary will trace Walker’s journey from a small-town Georgia standout to one of college football’s most iconic figures—and ultimately a national symbol of athletic excellence.

“This film is about more than just football,” said executive producer Lisa Cortez. “It’s about how Herschel Walker became a cornerstone of Georgia’s identity, a standard of greatness that continues to influence the Bulldogs program to this day.”

Walker’s time at the University of Georgia, spanning from 1980 to 1982, was nothing short of legendary. In his freshman year, he led the Bulldogs to a national championship, and by the end of his junior season, he had rushed for over 5,000 yards—earning the 1982 Heisman Trophy and solidifying his place in college football history. But The Legend of 34 digs deeper than the stats.

The film reportedly explores how Walker’s success revitalized Georgia’s national presence, helped elevate the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and shaped generations of players and coaches who followed. Interviews with head coach Vince Dooley, longtime Bulldogs fans, and more recent Georgia stars provide a powerful through-line showing how Walker’s influence remains woven into the fabric of the program.

ESPN’s report also notes that the documentary doesn’t shy away from the challenges and controversies that Walker faced, including his transition to the NFL, his personal struggles, and his later entry into the public spotlight beyond football. “The Legend of 34” aims to present a full picture—one that highlights not just Walker’s triumphs but also the resilience and complexity that made him such a compelling figure.

Set against the backdrop of Sanford Stadium, Athens culture, and the Bulldogs’ storied history, the film captures the unique bond between Walker and the Georgia fanbase. His legacy, as depicted in the documentary, is not simply that of a record-breaking athlete, but of a man who inspired a program and a state.

Netflix has not yet released an exact premiere date, but the documentary is expected to arrive this fall, just as the college football season hits full stride. Early buzz suggests it could become one of the platform’s most-watched sports titles to date.
