Breaking today: Former Wigan star Ben Flower lands shock new role in rugby union

In a twist that has caught many off guard in the rugby world, former Wigan Warriors powerhouse Ben Flower has stepped into a surprising new chapter of his sporting journey — this time, in rugby union.

Known for his no-nonsense playing style and commanding presence on the rugby league field, Flower has made a striking return to the sport, not as a player but as a coach in the 15-a-side code. After hanging up his boots following an impressive career in league, few expected the Welshman to pivot into union — especially in a leadership capacity.

Flower, who earned his reputation as one of the Super League’s toughest forwards, has officially joined Ebbw Vale RFC, a Welsh Premiership club, as part of their coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season. The 36-year-old will take on a forwards coaching role, bringing with him a wealth of experience from over a decade of professional rugby league, including multiple Super League titles with Wigan and international caps with Wales.

“I’ve always had a deep respect for rugby union,” Flower shared in a statement following the announcement. “While my playing days were spent in league, I grew up around union in Wales. This new role feels like a natural next step — and I’m excited to contribute to the development of players and the growth of the club.”

Flower’s move into union coaching marks a full-circle moment for the Cardiff-born athlete. Before making his mark in the league world with Celtic Crusaders and later Wigan, Flower’s early exposure to rugby came through union during his youth. His transition to the rival code, however, saw him thrive — highlighted by Grand Final victories and a fearsome reputation on the pitch.

Ebbw Vale RFC’s head coach also welcomed the appointment with enthusiasm. “Ben’s arrival is a massive boost for us,” said Jason Strange. “He’s got a winning pedigree, unmatched work ethic, and a defensive mindset that fits perfectly with what we’re building. The boys will learn a great deal from someone who’s played at the highest level under immense pressure.”

Since retiring in 2021, Flower had largely kept a low profile in the public rugby scene, focusing on personal business ventures and family. However, he remained close to the sport, offering mentoring sessions and strength training for young athletes across South Wales. His return in a formal coaching capacity indicates a strong desire to shape the future of rugby from the sidelines.

Though rare, transitions from rugby league to rugby union — particularly in coaching — are not entirely unprecedented. Still, Flower’s name wasn’t one many would’ve expected to emerge in union circles this year.

As pre-season preparations get underway at Ebbw Vale, all eyes will be on how Flower adapts to the technical nuances of rugby union coaching. With his rich experience, physical acumen, and leadership qualities, there’s optimism that his influence could usher in a new era of toughness and tactical edge for the Welsh club.
