Matt Peet provides major Bevan French and Luke Thompson fitness updates

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has shared crucial fitness updates regarding two of the club’s key players—Bevan French and Luke Thompson—as the team continues its push toward the business end of the Super League season. Peet addressed the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture, offering clarity on the current health status of the duo, both of whom have been nursing injuries in recent weeks.
Bevan French, the electric Australian back who has been a standout performer this season, has missed recent matches due to what was initially described as a minor hamstring concern. However, Peet confirmed that French’s situation has progressed positively and that the club is optimistic about his return in the near future.
“Bevan has responded really well to treatment,” Peet stated. “He’s been training at a good level with the medical team, and while we’re still being cautious, there’s a strong chance he’ll be available for selection in the coming week or two.”
French’s absence has been keenly felt, particularly given his playmaking ability and game-breaking speed. Wigan’s attack has lacked some of its usual dynamism, and Peet admitted the team is eager to see him back in action, but will not rush him back at the expense of long-term health.
“We don’t want to take any risks with a player like Bevan,” Peet emphasized. “His welfare is our top priority, but everything is pointing in the right direction.”
On the other hand, Luke Thompson’s situation appears slightly more complex. The England international prop, who returned to Super League this season after a stint in the NRL with Canterbury Bulldogs, has been dealing with a recurring ankle issue. Thompson has missed a string of games and concerns had grown among fans over the severity of his condition.
Peet acknowledged that Thompson’s recovery has been slower than anticipated, but assured supporters that the club’s medical staff are working tirelessly to get him back on the pitch.
“With Luke, it’s been a bit of a frustrating one,” Peet admitted. “He’s had a few setbacks, but nothing that requires surgery at this point. We’re working closely with him to build up strength and stability. He’s desperate to get back out there, and we’re equally keen to have him leading from the front.”
Thompson’s absence has been particularly impactful in the forward pack, where his leadership and physical presence have been sorely missed. Peet praised the rest of the squad for stepping up in his absence, but noted that having Thompson back would be a significant boost heading into the final stretch of the season.
Despite the setbacks, the Wigan boss remained upbeat about the squad’s injury management and praised the medical and performance teams for their diligent work.
“We’ve been really pleased with how our staff have handled things. These players are being looked after in the best possible way, and I’m confident both Bevan and Luke will return stronger than ever.”
