Breaking News: Derby County Launch Over £5m Bid for Striker Amid Ipswich Town Interest
Derby County have officially tabled a substantial offer for Charlotte FC striker Patrick Agyemang, with reports confirming a bid in excess of £5 million as they look to strengthen their attack ahead of the new Championship season. The 24-year-old frontman, currently plying his trade in Major League Soccer, has been in fine form in the 2025 campaign, attracting interest from both sides of the Atlantic — including from fellow English second-tier side Ipswich Town.
According to BBC Derby’s senior sports journalist Dominic Dietrich, the Rams have lodged a formal bid in the region of \$7 million — approximately £5.1 million — for Agyemang’s services. The move highlights Derby’s ambition under manager John Eustace, who is being backed in the transfer market following his successful mission to secure the club’s Championship status last season.
Agyemang, a physical and mobile striker, has enjoyed a breakout year in the MLS, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in just 18 appearances in the current season. His exploits have not gone unnoticed internationally either, as he’s netted five goals in nine games for the United States national team since earning his first cap earlier this year.
However, there is some confusion surrounding the state of negotiations. While transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggested that Derby were “closing in” on securing Agyemang, GIVEMESPORT’s USA-based journalist Tom Bogert has countered those claims, insisting a deal is not yet agreed and negotiations are still ongoing. Despite this, the size of Derby’s bid is viewed as a clear statement of intent, especially with Ipswich Town also in pursuit of the forward.
Agyemang was drafted by Charlotte FC in February 2023 as the 12th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft. His early professional career saw him split time between Charlotte’s first team and their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, Crown Legacy FC. It was with Crown Legacy where he made an early impact, scoring 10 goals in just 12 appearances, which earned him a permanent role in the senior squad.
Since breaking into Charlotte FC’s first team, Agyemang has become a regular fixture, tallying 22 goals and five assists across 72 appearances. His performances have been good enough to earn a call-up to the US national team under coach Mauricio Pochettino — a move that has further boosted his value on the international market.
This aggressive bid from Derby comes after they secured another key striker, Carlton Morris, signaling a serious push for promotion. The club appears determined to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship table, and Agyemang is viewed as a central part of that strategy.
Still, spending over £5 million on one player is a huge commitment in the context of second-tier football. For Derby, the gamble must pay off. Eustace’s decision to join the club was based on a promise of greater ambition — a promise the club seems intent on fulfilling.
Now, all eyes will be on whether Derby can fend off competition from Ipswich and finalize what could become one of the Championship’s most talked-about transfers this summer.
