Willie Isa: Wigan Warriors veteran announces surprise retirement

In a move that has caught many by surprise, Wigan Warriors stalwart Willie Isa has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby league, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned over a decade and left a lasting legacy at the DW Stadium.
Isa, who has been a fixture in the Wigan Warriors setup since joining the club in 2016, made the announcement earlier today, stating that the decision came after deep personal reflection and discussions with his family and the club’s leadership.
“This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly,” Isa said in a heartfelt statement. “Wigan has been more than just a club to me—it’s been a home, a community, and a huge part of my life. But after talking with my loved ones and thinking about what comes next, I feel the time is right to step away.”
The 35-year-old forward, known for his tireless work ethic, aggressive defense, and selfless attitude on the pitch, made over 200 appearances for Wigan. Throughout his time with the club, Isa helped secure multiple trophies, including Super League titles and Challenge Cup victories. His leadership and consistency made him a fan favorite and a key figure in the dressing room.
Born in New Zealand and of Samoan heritage, Isa began his professional career with the Parramatta Eels in the NRL before moving to the UK, where he played for Castleford Tigers and Widnes Vikings prior to his long and fruitful spell with Wigan. His versatility allowed him to play in both the back row and centers, offering coaches flexibility and reliability across the field.
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet praised Isa’s contribution to the club, describing him as “the kind of player every coach dreams of having.”
“Willie has been a warrior in every sense of the word,” Peet said. “He’s shown up day in, day out with professionalism and commitment. He’s been a leader for our younger players and a rock for our team. His retirement is a huge moment for the club and for those who have worked alongside him.”
While his departure will leave a gap in the squad, Isa has hinted at future involvement in the sport, possibly in a coaching or mentoring capacity. The club is expected to hold a tribute event in his honor in the coming weeks, allowing fans the chance to say goodbye and celebrate his achievements.
Supporters have already begun flooding social media with tributes, sharing memories and messages of gratitude. One fan wrote, “Willie Isa gave everything every time he stepped on the pitch. A true Wigan legend. He’ll be missed.”
As he transitions into the next chapter of his life, Isa remains grateful for everything rugby league has given him.
“I’ve lived my dream, and now I look forward to the next journey—whatever that may be,” he said.
