BREAKING NEWS: Everton ‘behind the black ball’ in bid to sign Liam Delap

Everton’s hopes of landing highly-rated striker Liam Delap appear to be fading, as the Merseyside club finds itself on the back foot in the increasingly competitive race for the young forward’s signature. With multiple Premier League rivals and top-tier Championship clubs circling, the Toffees are reportedly “behind the black ball” in their pursuit—a phrase that perfectly captures the uphill battle they now face.

Delap, 21, is viewed as one of the most promising English strikers of his generation. After progressing through Manchester City’s academy and showing flashes of brilliance during loan spells with Stoke City and Hull City, his stock has steadily risen. Despite limited first-team opportunities at City, his powerful frame, sharp finishing, and intelligent movement have not gone unnoticed.

Everton had made Delap a primary target this summer, hoping to inject youth and dynamism into a squad that has struggled to consistently find the net in recent seasons. But sources close to the situation suggest that Everton’s financial constraints and uncertain standing in the transfer market have complicated their efforts.

While the club remains interested, they are believed to be lagging behind clubs with clearer project visions and more immediate paths to first-team football for the young striker. Southampton, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion, are reportedly among the frontrunners and are pushing hard to secure Delap’s services. Their ability to offer a key attacking role and a stable environment could prove decisive.

Manchester City, for their part, are in no rush to make a decision. They recognize Delap’s potential and are weighing the benefits of another season-long loan versus a permanent transfer with a buy-back clause. That hesitance may leave the door open for multiple outcomes, but Everton’s current position doesn’t appear to be favorable.

Adding to the difficulty is the growing pressure on Everton’s recruitment department. Following consecutive relegation battles, the club needs not only to rebuild but to do so smartly and efficiently. The pursuit of Delap seemed like a strategic move toward that end—a blend of long-term promise and short-term impact. Unfortunately, Everton’s limited financial leverage and competition from more stable suitors are hampering their ability to get the deal over the line.

Sean Dyche, who has been vocal about needing fresh legs up front, remains hopeful that Everton can still make significant moves before pre-season kicks into full gear. But the Delap situation may force the club to pivot to alternate targets unless a breakthrough occurs soon.

As of now, Everton’s hopes rest on convincing Delap and his representatives that Goodison Park offers the right platform for his development. With several clubs better placed, however, that might prove a tough sell.

It’s still early in the summer window, and football deals can change quickly. But unless Everton can shift the dynamics in their favor, they may have to watch Liam Delap thrive in another team’s colors next seasons.
