Breaking today: Bengals Identify Leading Contender for Defensive Coordinator Role

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals have zeroed in on their preferred choice to fill the team’s vacant defensive coordinator position, league sources confirmed Monday.

Following weeks of interviews and internal discussions, the Bengals have identified as their top candidate to replace former coordinator Lou Anarumo, who departed earlier this offseason to pursue a head coaching opportunity. While the team has not finalized a deal, several sources with direct knowledge of the search process said Cincinnati is “highly confident” in leadership, experience and defensive philosophy.

An official announcement could be made as early as this week, pending contract negotiations.

He, who most recently served as \[previous role, e.g., linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens], has drawn praise across the league for his work with high-energy, disciplined defensive units. Known for his aggressive play calling and strong communication skills, he has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s brightest young defensive minds.

The Bengals interviewed a number of candidates over the past three weeks, including internal options and established names from across the league. However,  impressed the front office and coaching staff with a detailed vision for the team’s future on the defensive side of the ball.

“His ability to connect with players and maximize their strengths stood out immediately,” a team source told the Associated Press. “He understands today’s game and brings the kind of intensity we want our defense to reflect.”

Cincinnati finished the 2024 season ranked 21st in total defense, allowing 351.6 yards per game. Although the unit showed flashes of potential—particularly against the run—it struggled with consistency, especially in late-game situations. Team leadership made it clear they were searching for a coordinator who could elevate the defense to match the explosiveness of their offense.

Head coach Zac Taylor has not publicly commented on the leading candidate but emphasized the importance of the hire at season’s end. “We’re looking for a coach who brings energy, intelligence, and a clear plan for how to get the best out of our players,” Taylor said in January. “This is a critical decision for our team moving forward.”

He has long been considered a rising star in NFL coaching circles. After beginning his coaching career in the college ranks, he transitioned to the NFL and climbed quickly through the ranks thanks to his detailed preparation and ability to develop young talent.

If hired, his first major task will be addressing Cincinnati’s pass defense, which ranked 26th in the league in yards allowed through the air. The Bengals are also expected to target defensive backs and edge rushers in the upcoming NFL Draft and free agency period.
