TEAMS: Big in for Magpies, three changes for Demons

MELBOURNE — The Magpies have received a significant boost ahead of this weekend’s blockbuster clash, while the Demons are making several adjustments in response to form and fitness.
Collingwood will welcome back a major piece of their lineup as star midfielder Jordan De Goey has been named for his first game since suffering a hamstring injury in Round 7. De Goey’s return comes at a crucial time for the reigning premiers, who are looking to regain their rhythm after a shaky couple of weeks.
The 28-year-old’s inclusion headlines the Round 13 teams, with coach Craig McRae confirming De Goey will slot straight into the starting midfield mix.
“Jordy’s had a strong few weeks on the track and ticked every box medically,” McRae told reporters on Thursday. “We’re confident he’s ready to make an impact and give us that edge around the contest.”
Meanwhile, Melbourne is shaking things up with three changes of their own as they prepare for a high-stakes matchup that could have major top-four implications.
The Demons have brought in defender Jake Bowey, versatile forward Ben Brown, and debutant Taj Woewodin—son of former Brownlow Medalist Shane Woewodin—in a move designed to spark both ends of the field.
Veterans Tom McDonald and Michael Hibberd have been omitted, while small forward Kade Chandler will miss due to a minor calf strain suffered at training.
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said the decisions weren’t taken lightly but were necessary as the club aims to regain consistency.
“We’ve got high standards, and right now we’re not quite where we want to be,” Goodwin said. “Taj has earned his opportunity with strong VFL form, and we think Jake and Ben can give us the structure we need in key areas.”
For the Magpies, De Goey’s return wasn’t the only noteworthy selection. Young ruckman Aiden Begg has retained his spot after impressing last week, while veteran Jeremy Howe remains sidelined with groin soreness. Small forward Jack Ginnivan, who had been under selection pressure, has kept his place for at least another week.
With both teams eyeing a critical win to maintain pressure on the ladder leaders, the stage is set for a high-intensity contest at the MCG.
The Magpies currently sit in fifth place with an 8-3-1 record, while the Demons, who have dropped two of their last three games, sit just outside the top eight at 6-5.
Expect fireworks early, with De Goey’s return likely to lift Collingwood’s midfield aggression, while Melbourne’s changes signal a desire to increase flexibility and scoring output.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:25 p.m. local time Saturday night at the MCG.
