Interest from Duke Basketball in a Transfer Removes Player from Transfer Portal

BYU guard Dallin Hall received interest from the Duke basketball program and other schools, but he has opted to stay with the Cougars.

Last week, Duke basketball emerged as one of the ten programs reportedly under consideration by Dallin Hall after he entered the transfer portal earlier in the month. However, like several other veteran guards who have attracted interest from the Blue Devils during this busy offseason in Durham, the BYU sophomore is no longer being pursued by Jon Scheyer and his team.

On Friday, Hall revealed his choice to remain at BYU for his junior season, despite the departure of former Cougar head coach Mark Pope to Kentucky. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Hall was highly sought after during his two-week tenure in the transfer portal, primarily due to his high basketball IQ and experience gained from starting 51 games out of 68 appearances in his first two years in Provo, Utah.

Nevertheless, Hall considered BYU as a viable option throughout his transfer decision-making process, and ultimately, the program’s new head coach, Kevin Young, emerged victorious in securing his commitment.

A challenge that the Duke basketball coaching staff may be facing as they seek to bolster their backcourt depth for the 2024-25 season is that rising junior Tyrese Proctor and sophomore Caleb Foster are already widely expected to be the starters. Many of the high-caliber players in the transfer portal likely prioritize guaranteed playing time, which may not be readily available under Scheyer & Co.’s current roster configuration.
