Four Los Angeles Chargers Stars may have their contracts reviewed or terminated for reasons relating to team’s salary cap

The Los Angeles Chargers made waves this offseason with the hiring of head coach Jim Harbaugh, but uncertainties loom over key players as the 2024 season approaches.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, defensive ends Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, along with wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, collectively consume over half of the Chargers’ salary cap. Fowler noted that while it would be surprising for the team to release all four to save $80.8 million in cap space, it would also be unexpected for all of them to return under their current contracts.

Fowler provided assessments and predictions for each player:

– Allen’s return seems optimistic, possibly with a revised contract.

– Mack has garnered interest from other teams as a potential trade target.

– Bosa, a premier player, faces uncertainty due to injury history despite his talent.

– Williams may be released outright following an ACL tear.

The potential availability of these star players presents opportunities for other teams this offseason. The Chargers’ struggles to keep them healthy, particularly around quarterback Justin Herbert, have contributed to their playoff drought since 2018.

With running back Austin Ekeler set to enter free agency, the Chargers face further roster changes. Their inability to compete effectively in the AFC West and limitations imposed by the salary cap necessitate action.

Restructuring contracts for key players or exploring trades, such as with Mack, could facilitate a rebuild under Harbaugh’s leadership. Addressing these issues is crucial for the Chargers to challenge the dominance of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
